Book Review and Giveaway!

I was excited to read the new romantic suspense, A Familiar Fear, by Kathi Oram Peterson. The back copy made it sound like a can't-put-down sort of novel and I was anxious to start reading!

Ex-FBI agent Riley Scott is still haunted by her brush with near-death taking down a Russian crime boss. But she's resigned her position to take a nice quiet job as a sheriff in a small town on Agate Island. Nothing goes as planned, however, when she meets the lookalike of the crime boss on the ferry. He's supposed to be dead! Riley immediately goes into protective mode, since she finally has her son with her and they have a lot of catching up to do. But both of them are drawn into a cat and mouse game that could cost them their lives.

I loved how real Riley felt from the first page. Her emotional and physical scars have twisted her future and she's trying to make the best of it. But meeting Matthew Taggart on that ferry makes her question all her decisions. The author does a great job in setting up the adventure we're about to take with Riley---the first four chapters are just like a roller-coaster climbing to the top of the first curve before it takes you hurtling down!  Matthew Taggart is a wonderful hero and having both Matthew and Riley on the run with their kids creates a lot of tense, and sometimes funny, moments. I like that the author kept the plot rolling at a breakneck pace and really packed a punch as Riley and Matthew try to figure out who to trust. The secondary characters are well-drawn and there are a lot of twists and turns that readers won't expect. Another compelling read from Ms. Peterson!

Here's the back copy:

Ex-FBI agent Riley Scott lives each day with the scars of her former career. After the murder of her husband and the recent attempt on her own life by the Russian mafia, her heart is irrevocably broken. Agate Island seems like the perfect place to begin building a new future for herself and her teenage son, yet even before the ferry docks at their new home, Riley realizes there will be no escape for her. There, on the boat, is mafia boss Maksimillian Petruso—the man who took everything from her. The man she killed.

Matthew Taggart knows who Riley is and understands her reaction to his resemblance to Maksimillian Petruso. But Matthew is nothing like his estranged criminal father. So far, he has been able to hide from that evil world. However, he’s afraid Riley’s appearance on the island may lead his family’s mafia connections to his doorstep. After all, she is the agent who took down his father. Matthew needs to leave town. Fast. Unfortunately, when the family wants to find him, there is nowhere he can hide. Now he and Riley are thrown together in a dangerous connection, and learning to trust each other is their only hope of survival.
